David Van Buren Wampler (1837 - 1917)

I garnered David Van Buren Wampler's birth date, of 1 Mar 1837, from his death certificate (on Ancestry's Indiana Death Certificate collection) and his death notices (which appeared in 2 local Spencer, Owen county, Indiana newspapers after his death (16 Aug 1917) and burial). Per his death notices and his sister, Elizabeth Wampler Cline, who was the informant for his death certificate, David Van Buren Wampler was born in Owen county, Indiana versus Monroe county, Indiana as he is often listed with as a birth place. He was buried in Chambersville Cemetery in Spencer, Owen county, Indiana area.

Only names shared, besides David's own name, in either notice was only in one of the two, and in that one his surviving siblings were listed by name. He is mentioned, in both obits, to being survived by a wife, one son and one daughter. However on David's death certificate his sister, Elizabeth, has him listed as "widowed". One of the two death notices also shared David V. Wampler had been married three times prior to his death, "with his last wife surviving" him in 1917.

Per my research, David Van Buren Wampler first married Emily Ann Edwards in May 1862 in Indiana. I am still working on her side of the information, as some have her marriage to David being her second marriage and some others have her still living in 1870s which would mean that she and David V Wampler had divorced. David Van Buren Wampler, for the 1870 US census, is listed in his parents' household without a spouse but with a young child, named Samantha, which could be assumed, with the child's estimated age on that particular census, to being David's daughter from his marriage to Emily Ann Edwards.

In July 1871 I have David Van Buren Wampler marrying, for his second time, to Mary E. Allen in Owen county, Indiana. Per online trees, including the one world one at FamilySearch, David's second wife died in 1877.

I have a daughter, Dollie Arabell Wampler, born in Aug 1877 for David Van Buren's second marriage. Dollie likely may been a nickname, but she used Dollie on her marriage records and what was used for her later 1953 death certificate as well. Thanks to Dollie's marriage and death certificate records, I also have Mary E. Allen's middle name being Elizabeth.

For the "one son", that is stated to surviving David V. Wampler, I have only come across one male child being attributed to David - and that male child was supposedly named Robert and stated in some online trees/sources to being born in 1872. That is all I have for Robert Wampler, and this scant information would have his mother being Mary Elizabeth Allen thereby having two children resulting from David Van Buren's second marriage before Mary Elizabeth Allen's death in 1877.

In 1879, in Morgan county, Indiana, a David Wampler married a Nancy Wiatt. This is possibly the record for David Van Buren Wampler's third, and final, marriage as he is listed in 1900 and 1910 census reports with a spouse named Nancy and their marital information, in one of those two census reports, backs up the 1878/9 marriage year thought. No children are stated to resulted from this marriage.

Referring to the death notices's information in with my research, to sort out the unnamed individuals within both versions of those notices, this has me with the elusive Robert Wampler (b. 1872) being the "one son" stated to surviving his father in 1917 ... and with Dollie Arabell (b. 1877) as the "one daughter" since Dollie passes away in 1953. I already have David with a wife named Nancy in his 1900 and 1910 census reports, so this points to Nancy being the surviving wife in 1917 and a Nancy Wampler who passed away in 1934 in Owen county, Indiana is listed, on her death certificate, as being a widow of a David Wampler - this may be the death record for David Van Buren Wampler's 3rd wife. Nancy Wampler, who died in 1934, was buried in Chambersville Cemetery as well.

Which this above collection of dates and names would also, sadly, point toward that the inferred daughter, named Samantha from the 1870 US Census and attributed to David Van Buren Wampler's first marriage, had died before 16 Aug 1917.

In reference to Dollie Arabella Wampler, as I shared above on how her own paper trail was used on my side to help sort out and narrow down "who was 'likely' who" for the unnamed individuals within her father's death notices, she was born Aug 1877 in Owen county, Indiana and died 1953 in Bedford, Lawrence county, Indiana. She had married three times during her life. Her first marriage was to Elisha Chambers and that child resulted in one child, a daughter named Floy L. Chambers born in 1901, before the marriage ended in divorce. Appears that Floy L. Chambers resided with her father per census reports and a couple newspaper mentions for Floy Chambers. Dollie then married a Otho Thomas Stimson and no children are listed resulting from this marriage prior to his death. In 1951 Dollie Arabella married a Thomas Jeremiah "Jerry" Waggoner and he was the informant for her 1953 death certificate.

Floy L. Chambers was a seamstress for L. S. Ayres and lived in Indianapolis, Marion county, Indiana. Floy died in 1983 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. She is stated to never married.

Indiana Wampler (1864 -1883), wife of George L. Knight

Indiana Wampler is listed, in her parent's household, Joseph Wampler and Cynthia Jane Smith, in the 1870 US Census and 1880 US Census in Monroe county, Indiana. On both census reports her age has her with an estimated birth year of 1864 and she is said to been born in Indiana, more than likely in Monroe county, Indiana.

Only other information I came across about her was a few family trees saying she married a George Knight. It seemed to come to a screeching halt after that. No children listed, no death information shared for her outside of maybe few online trees may share an occasional question mark (for the date) and "possibly in Monroe County" or more vague location of "Indiana".

So, here is what I eventually found:

On 11 May 1883, Indiana Wampler married George L. Knight in Monroe county, Indiana. This marriage apparently happened on the weekend immediately right after she won her bastardy case against the very same George L. Knight. After the jury gave it's verdict in her favor, per the newspaper accounts, George seemed to have a change of heart and suggested, in the court house, that they marry that weekend.

"It took the jury about fifteen minutes to decide the Wampler Knight bastardy suit. After it was over, it is said that hte defendent shook hands with the mother and chucked the baby under the chin, thinking no doubt, that after all it is nice to be a pa."

"There was a large audience in court last Tuesday, the front seats were occupied largely by bald-heads. The attraction was the bastardy suit of Indiana Wampler against George Knight. The jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff. Mr. Knight and Miss Wampler havod[sic] agreed to "kiss and make up," and will be married Sunday."

Per another article, from the Indianapolis News, it shared the information that after the May marriage, the couple went to live in Brown county, Indiana. The article is vague, but using the September publication date in with the paragraph sharing "some ten days ago", as some kind of time reference, this would have Indiana Wampler Knight passing in late August of 1883 in Brown county, Indiana. The article was about Indiana's friends found her sudden death suspicious and apparently went to court to have her body, buried in Monroe county, exhumed. No mention of which cemetery she was buried in nor have I located, at this time, a later shared determination of the exam/coroner's findings.

"Some ten days ago the wife of George Knight died suddenly and under circumstances which led her friends to suspect foul play. She was living in Brown county at the time of her death, but was buried in Monroe county. The body was exhumed and the stomach taken out for analysis. "

Not much is known about the child, who was the reason for the bastardy suit being filed that lead to Indiana Wampler marrying the baby's father. The newspaper articles I found did not mention the child's gender or name. In snooping around Google search results, the closest I came is an record, within a pdf file of Monroe county births, sharing that an Anna Wampler gave birth to a child on 5 Jan 1883 and, in the father column, was "NA". However, the child is listed simply as Infant Wampler. I should share a notation, from my side, that that alone does not have it "definitive" that it was Indiana Wampler who gave birth to a child on 5 Jan 1883, just sharing what I felt was maybe a "possibility" I have found so far and could try to use that date/time frame thought in hopes of locating more information.

I turned to George L. Knight, in hopes that poking around on his side of the paper trail would help lead to the child's name. Again I was hit with a brick wall. He had a child out of wedlock, in 1878, with a Catherine Eldrick in Brown county, Indiana. Some sources say he married Catherine Eldrick, and other sources don't say that they married although the child, William, had the surname of Knight. If George and Catherine married in Brown county, Indiana after she was pregnant with William Knight, they had divorced by May 1883 in order for George Knight to marry Indiana Wampler in Monroe county, Indiana.

Another source, at Rootsweb, shared that George L. Knight had 8 children. They listed the one child he had with Catherine Eldrick, but had him and Indiana Wampler not having a child. George L, Knight married a 3rd time, to Sarah Margaret Chandler, in 1899 in Monroe county, Indiana. The couple is said to have 6 children. So this information takes me to having the names of 7 of children: besides William, he had James Andrew, Maud Ellen, Henry Lewis, Eliza May, Minnie Alice and Gilbert Marshall Knight. I have not come across George Knight's obit at this time to compare the listing of survivors to the list of the 7 children's names shared in that particular Rootsweb posting.

In 1889 there is a "notice" which ran in the Bloomington newspapers about land division amongst George Knight and his siblings. In those notices is also listed an Elizabeth Wampler. George's parents, James Hoagland Knight and Eliza E. Carter, do not appear (thus far in my poking around) to have had a daughter named Elizabeth and it seems that their son, George, is the only one from the family that married a Wampler. Could this Elizabeth Wampler be Indiana Wampler's child? Hard telling, as there isn't much to work with thus far with this mystery. Searching for an Elizabeth Wampler who was born in 1883 doesn't seem to help lead me anywhere. Due to the lacking of a 1890 US Census, no idea where Indiana Wampler Knight's child was living at - by 1900, a 17 year old child doesn't appear to be listed in George Knight's nor Joseph Wampler's households.

Per this posting, I have shared that I managed to come across a bit more information about Indiana Wampler's short life. That information is having me cross my fingers that it is hopefully helpful as I continue to try to find more information about her only known - but also 'unknown' - child, per her taking the father to court for bastardy and the newspaper accounts sharing that led to her marrying the father of the child that is not shared by many within their own research.

Children of Harvey S. Wampler (1828-1885) and Martha Jane Harrison (1840-1914)

This posting serves as an update, of sorts, to information shared about Harvey S. Wampler (1828-1885) to share a little more about his children (than was previously shared).

Harvey S. Wampler married Martha Jane Harrison 30 Nov 1862 in Knox county, Indiana. Per the US Census reports, they resided in Washington Township and had at least six children: Joseph A., Elizabeth, Mary Ashby, Flora Ardelia "Della", Lillian M. "Lillie", and Nellie Dove Wampler. Martha Jane and the children remained in Washington Township after Harvey's death per the 1900 US Census.

Joseph A. Wampler was born, per census reports, in Jan 1864. His California death records list the full date of birth as 22 Jan 1864 and it was from those records where I got his middle initial. By 1910 he is in Washington and his occupation is listed as Logger for that year's census. In 1930 he is listed in Stockton State Hospital for Insane in Stockton, California. He died 18 Dec 1967 and was cremated. In the 1910 US Census he is listed being Single, in 1930 US Census and his death records his marital status is stated to being Unknown. I have not located his 1900 and 1920 US Census to help peg down around when he left Indiana for Washington and/or left Washington for California. I have not located marriage records - so he may have been a bachelor at time of death.

Elizabeth Wampler appears only in the 1870 US Census with estimated birth year for her is 1869. This leans thoughts to she probably died between when the census was taken in 1870 and before it was taken in 1880. Her burial location is unknown.

Mary Ashby Wampler was born 5 Apr 1871 and she married Jesse D. Grigsby. Together Mary and Jesse Grigsby had eight children. Mary died 3 Apr 1946 in Vincennes, Knox county, Indiana and is buried in Sumner, Lawrence county, Illinois next to her husband.

Flora Ardelia "Della" Wampler was born 3 Oct 1872 and she married twice; first marriage was to Clinton Wood and together they had seven children, and Della's second marriage was to F. W. Griffin in Arkansas, which did not have any children. Della, per online trees, passed away in 1935 in Arkansas (I have not yet located death records), and this would mean that she and Clinton Wood divorced as he passes away in 1949.

Lillian M. "Lillie" Wampler was born Apr 1877. In the 1910 US Census she is listed in her mother's household in Washington Township, Knox county, Indiana and, per this census, Lillie had a daughter born, out of wedlock, 5 months prior and Lillie is also listed as giving birth to one child with that child still living, which helps determine that the little girl listed in the household is Lillie's daughter. Lillie later married Jesse Wilbur Johnson in 1916 and they had a daughter in 1917. In 1920 US Census they are residing in Terre Haute, Indiana, and Lillie's oldest daughter is listed with the Johnson surname. In the 1930 and 1940 US Census, Jesse and Lillie Johnson are back in Knox county and residing in Vincennes. I came across 3 marriage records, two of which were in Ohio, for the daughter Lillie had with Jesse Johnson - but, for Lillie and Jesse, I have not come across further info for them past the 1940 US Census. Lillie's oldest daughter's paper trail also seems to go cold after the 1920 US Census.

Nellie Dove Wampler was born in 1881. She first married Louis Riley Hemry and resided in Palmyra Township, Knox county, Indiana where they had two daughters prior to Louis Henry's 3 Nov 1914 death. Louis was the son of James and Margaret McMasters Hemry, and when researching him also look for him as Lewis Hemry or Lewis/Louis Henry. Nellie D. married Jesse J. Jones in the fall of 1915 in Knox county, Indiana and they had two children together. I have not located a death date for Nellie D.; she may have died in Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio as she and Jesse Jones are listed living there for the 1930 and 1940 US Census after the 1920 census that had them in Washington, Daviess county, Indiana.

So Harvey S. Wampler and Martha Jane Harrison did have children, and grandchildren as well.

Alexander Wampler (1812 - around 1845) and children born after his death

Had an error pop up in the family tree program I use saying I had a couple kids in the tree listed being born after the death of a parent.

So, sure enough I had this gal listed as being born 2 years after her father died. Which would be impossible - even if the mother was pregnant at the time the father passed "around 1845".

Found the gal's FindAGrave memorial page, it has her birth info being 4 Jul 1846. Which theoretically works with the father passed "around 1845" thoughts. Her FindAGrave has her name as Lee Ann - However, in other online trees and such, I've seen her more often listed as Leanna J. and listed with a birth year of 1848.

Alexander Wampler (son of Christopher Wampler and Elizabeth Kettering) was born 3 Sep 1812 in Wythe county, Virginia. He married a Matilda Brown in 1835 in Smyth county, Virginia ... I don't have her parents, yet, and she is said to been born around 1819.

In the 1850 US Census in Smyth county Matilda Wampler, per how the census taker listed the people, is recorded as to living two other women and their children. Matilda is listed with 3 children transcribed (from the handwritten census) as to being: Mary (F-6), Stephen (M-5) and Sander Wampler (M-3). Matilda is marked in one column as to being over 20 years in age and cannot read or write.

This appears to be the first census error shared for Matilda Brown Wampler and/or her children. The transcription is correct in some aspects. However, if looking at the image of the census page itself, we notice that Nancy has a " shared for her last name which means she shared the same surname as the person above her ... which we see an older male, Billingsley Roberts, is listed on the line above her, as shared in the screenshot below, who probably should been listed as the Head of the family instead:

No Lee Ann/Leanna J. Wampler listed with Matilda there. However I think Sanders may been a mistaken transcription of the handwriting, and what is thought to be an "S" is an "L" - and so maybe the census taker had written Leande(r), which could actually be Leanne and she is miss-marked as being a male child? Possible that is what happened as it has happened before. Recall that census takers did not take the large form around with them, but would take notes and then add that info from their notes to the form itself. So if he had sloppily written Leanne and just her age, then later on - when looking over the notes, he may thought he wrote Leander or something, which would been a male name.

Between the 1850 and 1860 US Census Matilda apparently remarried to a John Anderson (b. around 1804/9 time frame in Virginia) and the family is now living in Tazewell county of Virginia. Mary Wampler (the oldest daughter I have for Alexander Wampler and Matilda Brown) married Andrew J. Gillespie in Jan 1860, so she wouldn't appear in the mid-summer taken US census with her mother. Stephen is listed to being around 15 - which works with his paper trail info on him being born in 1844. No Sander Wampler listed, and he would been around 13 if he was 3 in 1850). Leanna J. Wampler is listed being around 11 (but her FindAGrave has her being born in 1846, which would had her being 13/14 years old - which would match up to the missing Sander/Leander Wampler's age and also help tilt the scale she was a daughter of Alexander Wampler, maybe born within a few months of his death if he passed in last half of 1845, with her being in the 1850 and 1860 US Census with Matilda). So I am going with the 1846 birth year for Lee Ann/Leanne J. Wampler in the family tree. although some online trees list her birth year as 1848.

The above image is a screenshot of John and Matilda Anderson's portion of the 1860 Census, but also shares census taker error number two? After Alexander's death and between 1850 and 1860, Matilda had at least three more children who are listed on the 1860 census as well: Emily (F-8), John (M-2), and America (F-under the age of 1) - all listed with the surname of Wampler. Which Alexander has been passed away for well over a decade by now - but apparently he nor Matilda Brown didn't have real good luck with census taker folks, in relation to how census takers handle recording their kids. Emily is probably a daughter of John Anderson (unless Matilda had a marriage between Alexander and him that Emily was a child of). The younger two are very likely children of John Anderson and _not_ Alexander Wampler, but .... they are being listed in family trees, by others, as Emily Wampler, John Anderson Wampler and America F. Wampler to being post-mortem children of Alexander Wampler due to a census taker in 1860 giving all the children in John Anderson's household the surname of Wampler.

In John and Matilda Anderson's 1870 US Census, taken in Tazewell county, they only have three children in the home: John A. and America F. Anderson, so that helps clear up the 1860 US Census error that had them listed with the surname of Wampler. Emily C. is still in the household, and she is listed with the same estimated birth year of 1852 and with surname of Wampler. If Alexander Wampler was her biological father, this would have his death thoughts change from "around 1845" to "around 1851/52". Emily C. never married and passed away 6 Sep 1882 in Smyth county, Virginia - on her death records she is listed as Emily C. Anderson and that her father was John Anderson. This record doesn't help explain why in 1860 and 1870 US Census she was listed both times with the surname of Wampler, even after Mary, Stephen and Leanna/Lee Ann were no longer with their mother.

With Matilda, I have seen her listed as to passing away in 1860s or 1870s, either in Wythe county or in Indiana. Appears neither of those thoughts are correct, but Matilda Anderson (nee Brown) passed away later, in 1888 in Smyth county.

Now that I got Lee Ann/Leanna J. figured out to being a child of Alexander Wampler, which started off this confirmation trek of sorts, and that the last two children (John and America) are not Wamplers but Andersons - where was Sarah Elizabeth (Jan 1841 - 1924) who is oft-listed in online trees being a child of Alexander and Matilda? She's not listed with Matilda Brown Wampler Anderson in the 1850 nor 1860 census. As images share, can't rely on online trees' info since majority of those, including the FamilySearch one world tree one, gave Alexander 3 children well after his death date thoughts ... and without the birth years of those later children raising the question, by folks' willingly sharing it, of how Alexander could have been the father. The only child, listed on paper, that is "up in the air" on being Alexander's biological child is Emily C. who is listed with an estimated birth year of 1852.

Christina Wampler Graybill 1753-1844 (or maybe 1771-1844?)

This is likely going to be re-visited (to add in more) or oft-linked to posting, as part of this is like a can of worms in untangling dates and (similar) names and such, then throwing in family lore thoughts.

In trying to research For Christina Wampler, said to be a daughter of Hans Peter Wampler Jr and his 1st wife, Anna Barbara, I came across two to three birth years given - here and there - for her: 1753, 1760, and 1771. There are also marriage dates for her and Johannes/John Peter Graybeal/Graybill of 1779 and 1786. Which I guess leads to Johannes/John Peter Graybeal/Graybill getting multiple birth year thoughts as well as I have come across 1750, 1755, 1762 and 1768/69 shared for him.

Now, due to the family lore that Christina Wampler was one of the children of Peter Jr and Barbara who were kidnapped in 1757 and later returned, through a treaty, in 1764 ... that would lean folks to using the 1753 birth year to have her fit into that narrative. Which would lean to Johannes/John Peter Graybeal/Graybill having a birth year of 1750 to 1755 to have him being close to her in age.

John Peter Graybill died in 1842 and the headstone inscription says he was around 70 years old when passing. Which mathematically would give him a birth year thought of 1771/1772. However his FindAGrave memorial page shared 1762 as his birth year. Why? I don't know, the page manager did not explain the 1762 birth year thought shared.

Christina Wampler Graybill is stated to have died in 1844, and buried in same cemetery, has a headstone inscribed saying she was around 74 years of age at passing, which would mathematically place her with having a 1770/71 birth year.

So where does the 1760 birth year for her stem from? Maybe from some of the transcriptions shared on Ancestry** of her marriage records, for 1779 and 1786, listed her birth year being 1760. No image file is shared of the handwritten record used for the transcriptions to get a bit of a look at the handwriting. Problem I personally have with the online shared transcriptions is that two very different marriage years is listed for the couple and 6 to 7 years apart.

Decisions, at least on my side, come into play on which to use for "birth year" source: kidnapping year thoughts, the online shared transcriptions of marriage records or headstones where the inscription likely was based on information shared by Peter and Christina's family/children? The marriage record transcriptions would have her born after the other children were abducted and so would nix the kidnapping story, shared in later years by her children and their children, about her identity being confirmed due to her, after the return, singing a lullaby/children's song that her mother used to sing to her (and the other children). However, another tree branch also claims it was their mother whose identity was confirmed due to her recognizing/singing that same song - so can't really rely on the story if more than one branch is claiming it as "their (grand)mother did it". The headstone inscription itself, however, does not mathematically work with Christina and the kidnapping narrative though - she would had to been closer to around 94 when she died if using estimated birth year of 1753.

So, going back to touch base with birth year of 1771/1772 for Christina. Hans Peter Wampfler/Wampler Sr. had a brother, Johannes Christian Wampfler/Wampler, who came to America later, in 1747, who had a son named Hans Georg(e) Wampfler/Wampler - who had a daughter born September 7, 1771 in York county, Pennsylvania, named Christina. Could there been two Christina Wamplers born in 1771? Yeah, it's possible.

When looking at the marriage dates, which I came across two for this couple then bringing in the headstone inscriptions, for the same couple ... well, the headstone information nixes the 1779 marriage year. Which would also nix several children, attributed to them, being their children. The 1786 marriage year is slightly better, as Peter - if he had been around 70 years in age in 1842 - would been around 18 years old, if using the 1768/69 birth year, or around 15/16 years old, if going by 1771/1772 birth year via the headstone, when marrying in 1786. Which the 1760s and 1770z birth year thoughts would also work more easily in having him being a son of Johannes/John and Hannah - using the 1737 or 1747 birth year thoughts for the parents. In using the 1771/72 birth year for Christina would work for the 1786 marriage year as she would been around 14/15 when marrying. But they have children (Henry ~1778, John ~1780, and John Peter ~1783) attributed to them, but the birth years would only work with 1753 or 1760 birth year for Christina ... which would have to bump John Peter to the 1750/55 birth year as well.

One thing that is consistent, even with the marriage records' transcriptions on Ancestry, is that she is listed to being a daughter of Peter Wampler. Her mother's name is not listed, but Peter Wampfler/Wampler Sr. is not attributed to having a daughter named Christina - and his brother, Johannes Christian, did not have a daughter named Christina either. Hans Georg(e) Wampfler/Wampler's daughter, Christina, is said have passed away before 1817.

However, once past that, the rest is a can of worms. If I go with the headstones' information then it goes against the grain of those who feel she was born in time to been one of the kidnapped children but also the parentage thoughts of some children attributed to the couple. If I go with the 1753 date, that throws John Pater's parentage into a loop unless I have her marrying someone almost 10 years younger than her. If I go with 1760 date for Christina's birth thoughts, that doesn't work with the kidnap thoughts but does work for the kids attributions with either marriage year ... which the 1771 birth year doesn't work for the 1779 marriage year thoughts at all, so would have to go with the latter 1786 marriage year which doesn't work at all with at least 3 of the children.

So, for now, I am going with the headstone inscriptions, which - as I already said - likely was based upon information from her and/or her children closer to the time of Peter and her passing and will list the other year thoughts about birth in a notation for Peter and Christina. However, going this route would mean a 1779 marriage year would not work for either one of them and so throws parentage/age of three kids up in the air. Which means I will have rely more on paper trail thoughts to try helping have the children properly attributed. And I will have to see how it goes from there ...

This is not a negative as it forces me to try to locate more citations to add from my side of the researching online thoughts.

Reverend Boyd Ward Fielder 1855-1895

Currently working on one of Evalina Sanders Wampler and John Randolph Fielder's sons, Boyd Ward Fielder.

I have Boyd Ward Fielder listed with being born 4 March 1855 in Grayson county, Virginia. He became a Methodist minister before, or around, 1879 time frame as he is mentioned to have attended a Holston conference held in Abingdon, Virginia in that year and a sketch (essay) of his is shared, in 1913 within Volume 4 of Holston Methodism. for the years 1844 to 1870, about another attendee's speaking style.

Boyd Ward Fielder married Frances Elizabeth Davis on 15 October 1884 in Wythe county, Virginia. Frances Elizabeth, who went by her middle name, was born 20 January 1866 in Virginia to William J. Davis and Sarah A. Jackson.

Boyd most often appears by his initials, so B. W. Fielder. His wife went by Elizabeth Davis Fielder and she appears to have written at least two newspaper articles during their marriage. This becomes relevant later on with Elizabeth.

B. W. Fielder and his wife had at least 4 children attributed to them. Anna Saunders Fielder, born 1891 in Atchison county, Kansas, Helen Ward Fielder, born 1893 in Missouri, and I have seen a son listed with them on family trees - William Fielder - with a vague note that he died young (but no mention of year or location for his birth or death), and a child said to been stillborn (again, no mention of year or location for this child).

Rev. B. W. Fielder died from paralysis, or a stroke, which occurred almost a week earlier, on 22 September 1896 in Moberly, Randolph county, Missouri. He was buried in Saint Jude Cemetery at Monroe City, Monroe county, Missouri.

Rev. B. W. Fielder, a Methodist minister well and favorably known in this city, now of Moberly, was stricken with paralysis last Sunday morning while on his knees in prayer in his pulpit. His condition is regarded as critical.

His widow, Elizabeth Davis Fielder, remarried at least three times. Her marriages took her from Missouri to Illinois and eventually to Texas. She married a W. D. Waller in September of 1899 in Missouri. She is listed as being a widow when she married Charles J. Montouck in 1903, also in Missouri. He was employed in the insurance industry when they married and in 1906 he was assigned to northeastern Illinois. It appears that she and Charles Montouck divorced, possibly in Illinois, as in 1908 she married an Elbert C. Hendrix, employed as an inspector for the US Immigration Department, in Texas and it is stated, about a week after they married, that he was being transferred to El Paso area and she was going to Illinois to 'attend to business' before joining him in El Paso.

Mr. Charles Monckton and Mrs. Elizabeth Fielder Waller were quietly married in St. Louis last Saturday afternoon. The wedding was quite a surprise to the friends of both parties. Mrs. Waller left Louisiana Saturday morning telling her friends that she was going to St. Louis on business. Saturday evening she wired some friends in Louisiana that she was married. Both formerly resided in Hannibal and both are well and favorably known here. Mr. Monckton is engaged in the insurance business and was recently promoted to state manager of his company. The bride was the widow of the late E. D. Waller and is a lady of rare literary attainments. - Hannibal Journal.

The marriage of E. C. Hendrix, the popular immigration inspector of Hidalgo, and Mrs Elizabeth Monckton, of Aurora, Ill., the well known magazine writer, took place at Hidalgo Friday, Jan. 31. The bride has returned north to attend to some business matters, but will rejoin Mr. Hendrix shortly.

The many friends of Mr. Hendrix are congratulating him, upon his good fortune, and wish him and his talented bride a life of happiness and prosperity.

Her marriage to E. C. Hendrix appears to being her last marriage. Elizabeth C. Hendrix is listed in the 1910 US census being widowed in El Paso, Texas and her occupation being editor of a newspaper. In 1940 census she is listed, as Elizabeth C. Hendrix, living with her daughter Helen's family in California. She doesn't appear to have any children with her other husbands.

Elizabeth established herself as a writer, and besides at least two novels/books (one as early as 1906/1907 and it appears she was still married to Charles J. Montouck at the time of the publication), she also wrote a variety of articles, or stories, for newspapers and magazines. She is also credited as a writer in 1917 for the movie "Polly Put The Kettle On". She wrote under several names - Elizabeth Davis Fielder, Elizabeth Fielder Waller, Elizabeth C. Montouck, Mrs. C. J. Montouck, Elizabeth C. Hendrix and Elizabeth Chandler Hendrix to name a few attributed to her. Which coincides with her marriages. I don't know where the name Chandler came from, it may been a second middle name she had or it may been E. C. Hendrix's middle name? She is also mentioned to having written under the name of Elizabeth Roberts and one or two others. Hints of other marriages? I don't know.

On Elizabeth C. Hendrix's IMDb page, she is listed to passing away 23 June 1951 in Los Angeles county, California. There is very little information shared about her on that page. I have her living in California prior to her oldest daughter's second marriage in 1931 in California. I will hazard a broad guess that Elizabeth C. Hendrix and her daughter, Helen Fielder, may have moved to California between 1912 (year of Anna's first marriage) and 1917 (year of the movie) time period.

Boyd Ward Fielder and Frances Elizabeth Davis's oldest daughter, Anna, married a William Brand in El Paso, Texas in 1912 and they had two daughters before their divorce. Anna later married Henry Bates Willis in 1931, they married in California but they both resided in El Paso prior to and following their marriage. Anna appears to followed her mother's footsteps in terms of having a writing career, she is credited with at least one book but she appears to built her career through writing magazine articles. Anna passed away in El Paso in 1961.

Boyd Ward Fielder and Frances Elizabeth Davis's younger daughter, Helen, married Ferdinand J. Lopez and they had one son. She is said to also been a writer to magazines. Helen passed away in Los Angeles county, California in 1958.

Harvey S. Wampler 1828 - 1885

Harvey S. Wampler is a descendant of Hans George Wampler, son of Hans Peter Wampfler Sr., and Elizabeth Stephan/Steffey, daughter of Johannes Ulrich Stephan/Steffey and Anna Schirmer. Harvey is also one of the brothers of Rufus Morgan Wampler, who would been my 2x great-grandfather.

Harvey is hinted to being born in Virginia, probably Wythe county, in 1828 or 1829. I listed the 1828 year on my side based off majority of census reports that leaned to that year. US Census reports listed both Indiana and Virginia for his place of birth, however, I am leaning to Virginia due to his siblings.

"107 HARVEY S. WAMPLER, b. ca 1829; d. in Knox County, Indiana on 21 Sep 1885. He could have been the Harvey S. Wampler who was married in Knox County, Indiana, on 30 Oct 1862, to Martha J. Harrison. He was enumerated in the 1880 Census of Knox County. They had six or more children..."

Martha J. [Jane?] Harrison is said to been the daughter of James H. Harrison and Mary Jane Steffey. Her mother, Mary Jane, is listed as being a child of Henry Steffey Jr and Christine Staley. Henry Steffey Jr's father was a brother of Elizabeth Stephan/Steffey - so he was a son of Johannes Ulrich Stephan/Steffey and Anna Schirmer. Sharing that in fo for those who try to keep some track of the intermarriage that occurred in Wampler and/or Steffey family trees.

Martha Jane is said to been born in 1840 and probably in Virginia. An H. S. Wampler and M. J. Harrison married in Knox county, Indiana on 30 November 1862. Martha is said to passed away in February of 1914 in Knox county, Indiana. On the Indiana death certificate her name is listed as Mary, not Martha, and mother is listed to being Mary Jane Steffy but her father's first name not listed and he is listed being a Wampler, not a Harrison. I am not discounting the death record to being for Martha Jane Harrison Wampler, however with the intermarriage that went on between the lines/generations, I am going to see if I can find something else to help confirm it is her. So far I have not come across an obit or death notice shared for her in the local papers.

A Harvey Wampler is listed in the 1870 US Census in Knox County with a wife, Martha, and 2 children, Joseph, age 6, and Elizabeth, age 2. I have seen Joseph and Elizabeth listed being born in 1854 and 1859, but that clashes with the marriage info and with the 1860 and later US census reports, in terms of age listed for them. So, on my side, I am basing those two children's birth years off the 1870 US Census that they first appear in; Joseph Wampler, 1864, and Elizabeth, 1869.

Also, Harvey S. Wampler did not pass away in Knox county, Indiana and he did not die on 21 September 1885. Per a local newspaper, Harvey was hospitalized in May of 1885 and he died in Indianapolis, Marion county, Indiana on 17 September 1885, a Thursday, at the Insane Hospital. His body was shipped to Bruceville, Knox county, Indiana and it arrived on 18 September 1885, a Friday. The 21 September date is a Monday, and I am assuming, given the time line, the date of his burial in Knox county, Indiana.

Here is the information, from a local newspaper, that I used to base the dates of Harvey S. Wampler's hospitalization being on/about 27 May 1885, death being 17 September 1885 in Indianapolis, and subsequent burial thoughts in Knox county, Indiana on my side of working on the family tree:

The remains of Harvey Wampler were shipped to Bruceville last Friday. He died in the Insane Hospital, at Indianapolis, the day before.

I have come across names of six children attributed to Harvey S. Wampler and Martha Jane Harrison: Joseph [1864-?], Elizabeth [1869-?], Mary [1871-1938], (Flora?) Della [1872-?], Lillian "Lillie" [1876-?] and Dove N. [1881-?]. If following the intermarriage chain, the children would be descendants of Hans George Wampler Sr and Elizabeth Stephan/Steffey and Elizabeth's brother, Henry Stephan/Steffey and Louisa/Levicy [Phillippi?]. I am currently working on picking up the paper trail of the children, I know at least of 2 of the daughters married and one had at least 8 children and the other had 6 to 7 children.

John W. Martin 1835-1902

In the prior post I shared, about Johann Leonard Wampler and two of his eight children, John W. Martin makes his appearance into the family tree's branches.

He first appears in the 1840 US census for his grandfather's household. However, 1840 censuses only listed - by name - the head of the household (and sometimes not always by their name but in some instances as Widow [Surname] which there are a few of those in the 1840 census, if curious). John W. Martin is listed with the tally mark for "Males under the age of 10" line.

Birth year remains consistently listed, in later census reports, to being 1835. Location of his birth flips back and forth between Indiana and Illinois. But I am getting ahead of myself...

I have not located any records of Ann(a) Catherine Wampler's first marriage outside of what is shared in an obit someone shared on her FindAGrave Memorial page. From the obit we get the following information about the marriage:
·   She remained in the Illinois/Indiana area after her parents decided to return to Preble county, Ohio,
·   It may been a short marriage that ended due to the death of John W. Martin's father, John Martin, from cholera in Louisiana. The obit's wording is unclear if he died prior or after their son's birth. The marriage may have taken place between 1832 to early 1835 time frame,
·   Due to the death of the elder John Martin, Ann(a) Catherine returned to her parents' home in Preble county, Ohio.

John W. Martin's own paper trail shares that his parent's marriage was possibly interracial. In census reports, John W. Martin's father is listed to been born in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and "unknown".

His mother's parents and oldest brother went from Preble county, Ohio to Wabash county, Indiana around 1847/48. He and his mother are listed, with the surname of Wampler, on the 1850 US census of his Uncle William Wampler along with another nephew of his uncle (and his mother) named William M. Wampler. In the 1850 US Census he is marked as Mulatto.

In the 1860 and 1880 US Censuses, where he is living in his mother's home, he is listed as White. 1870 US Census he is listed as White and to be living next to his mother's residence/farm. Then in the 1900 US Census he is listed as Black, as he is also listed on his 1902 Indiana death certificate.

John W. Martin appears to have married only once. His wife, whose Find A Grave memorial page shares a headstone cared with the name Mary M., died in July of 1883 at the age of 24. According to my personal research, the head stone is incorrect about her name. John W. Martin is mentioned in the North Manchester Journal as to marrying Helena Fultz in February of 1883. A later notice, in the same newspaper in August of 1883, shares an "in memory of" advertisement placed by a social organization for Lena Martin who died July 25, 1883 and left a husband, John Martin, and a child. She is buried in the family cemetery of John W. Martin's stepfather's family. I have not come across a copy of the marriage record, they are said to have married in Canada. We see Lena Fultz in the 1880 US Census as she is listed in Ann(a) Catherine's household as "servant". When we get to John and Lena's child, further in the post, it helps further piece things together that John's wife was Helena "Lena" Fultz.

The "babe" mentioned in the death notice is John W. Martin's daughter, Lena Martin, who appears with him in the 1900 US Census. It is after that census Lena Martin becomes a bit of a mystery.

13 May 1902 John W. Martin passes away, from brain fever, in a Wabash county poor farm. He has two Find A Grave Memorial pages, one that says he is buried on the grounds of the county poor farm is not correct as his death certificate shares his body to be buried in the North Manchester area - which leans to the Find A Grave Memorial for him being buried in the Swank (family) cemetery, nest to his wife and in with other family members, being the right one. An Ervin Thompson was the informant for John W's death certificate, which may be why the parents are listed as "unknown". What is curious is that neither of John's half-brothers (Daniel D. Swank and Jacob L. Swank), any of their children nor his own daughter listed as the informant - but somehow the county poor farm and/or the informant got the information on where the body was to be buried. I have not located a death notice, or obit, for John W. Martin to be able to see if his daughter is mentioned in it.

So, from this point on, it is speculation only on if the Lena Martin listed in two marriage records for Marion county, Indiana is John W. Martin's daughter who was born in Wabash county, Indiana in 1883. A Lena Martin marries a Wilson in Marion county in 1903 - she lists her father to being John W. Martin and mother's maiden name to being Foltz. Her birth year is listed as 1882. In the second marriage record, before 1910, Lena Martin (that name) lists she is a widow and that her father was John W. [Surname not listed] and her mother's maiden name was Felts. I come across a Richard Shaw in the 1920 census for marion county, Indiana - he is listed as a boarder and being widowed, I don't see him nor Lena in the 1910 census.

What we do know, thanks to his mother's obit and his paper trail, is that John W. Martin is a descendant of Johannes Christian Wampfler and, his wife, Anna Tritten; their son Christian Wampler and, his wife, Justina Magdalena Cristillus; their son, Johannes [John] Wampler and his wife, Dorothea Hiller; their son, Johann Leonard Wampler and his wife, Ann(a) Mary (Maria) Martin; and their daughter, Ann(a) Catherine Wampler.

From one of Roy H. Wampler's book, which appears to be the same information, for the most part, on the Wampler/Wampfler database website, I started off on "what can I find" quest with this:

In 1810 Leonard Wampler and family lived in Germany Twp., Adams Co., PA; in 1819-1820 they lived in Baltimore, MD. The Baltimore City diectory of 1819 lists Leonard Wampler, tanner, corner of Saratoga and Pearl. In 1840 he and his family lived in Gratis Twp., Preble Co., OH. He and three of his sons were taxpayers in Preble Co. OH, between 1838 and 1846, but their whereabouts afterwards are unknown. [77,78,79,80,165]

Not a lot to work with, but definitely enough to help kick start a search to find more about this couple and/or their children. A fun genealogical endeavor on my side, even if Johann Leonard Wampler descends from Johannes Christian Wampfler and Anna Tritten's side and my genealogical ties to this family stems from the Hans Peter Wampfler and Anna Lung's side of things.

Records I can find for this family is the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1840 US Census reports Leonard Wampler is listed as head of household. I also found William Wampler's christening record, his name is listed as Wilhelm, along with christening records for Joshua, Ann(a) Catherine, Maria Magdalena, and Savilla (name transcribed at Sybilla).

The above records show the family moved around a bit as they go from Adams county, Pennsylvania to Frederick county, Maryland then to Baltimore before going back to Adams county, Pennsylvania. Between 1820 and 1840 they go to Ohio as by the 1840 census they are listed in Gratis, Preble county, Ohio. Which, so far, what I am coming across matches up to what Roy H. Wampler shared in his book.

I located Leonard and his wife, Ann, listed in the household of their son, William Wampler, in Wabash county, Indiana for the 1850 US census. Also listed in William's household is Ann C. Wampler (b. 1813 Maryland), John W. Wampler (b. 1835 Indiana) and William M. Wampler (b. 1843 Ohio).

Did William Wampler marry? It doesn't appear that he did, nor have any children in what I have managed to locate about him. Which matches up to Roy H. Wampler's and the Wampler/Wampfler Database site's information for William.

The 1850 census taker, although correct in majority of the information listed for the family, listed 2 family members with the incorrect surname, which is revealed when seeing the obit for one of Leonard Wampler's daughters that someone shared on her FindAGrave memorial page ... and her obit shares a bit more about her parents, as well as herself, which helps to put some things into place.

SWANK, Mrs. Ann Catharine         March 29, 1888
After a long and painful illness Mrs. Ann Catharine Swank departed this life at her home the 25th inst. The subject of this notice was the daughter of Leonard and Anna May Wampler, born in Mechanicstown, Frederick County, Maryland, May 2nd, 1813. When five years old her parents moved to the city of Baltimore, remaining hter three years, thence again to Adams County, Pennsylvania, and in 1828 emigrated to the state of Ohio, finally settled down in Preble County, near Winchester. Her parents being in straightened circumstances Catharine in company with the Rev. Joseph Wampler and family emigrated to Easton, Illinois, not far west of Terre Haute, and set up in the millinery business. She then united with the Presbyterian Church (being a child of the Covenant). Shortly after that she became the wife of Captain John Martin who was plying a steamer between the above city and New Orleans. In his last trip he was taken with Asiatic Cholera and died at the latter city. John W. Martin ws the fruit of that marriage. After the death of her husband she disposed of her goods, received her dismission from the church and returned to Preble County, Ohio, the home of her parents, where she again entered the church on presentation of her certificate. After the lapse of years the family moved to Wabash County, Indiana. About the year 1848 or 49. In 1851 Catharine became the wife of Daniel Swank, Sr., who died in 1860, she bore him three sons, Viz: Daniel D. and William H. and Jacob L. The second of whom died in early childhood. She entered the Lutheran Church some 20 years ago, remained an active member and a liberal contributor to the end of her useful life. Mrs. Swank during the last six months which she bore with wonderful christian fortitude till the messenger of death, like an angel of mercy came to her relief. Funeral at the Lutheran church, Tuesday noon, burial at the Swank Cemetery. Sermon preached Rev. C. W. Maggart.

Per Ann(a) Catherine Wampler's obit, in the 1830s her parents and some of their children (as in Ann(a) Catherine at least) moved briefly to Illinois, and where they weren't far from Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana area. It was during this move that Ann(a) Catherine Wampler is said to marry a John Martin. Sometimes around the time of her marriage, her parents moved (back?) to Preble county, Ohio area. After her parents moved to Ohio, Ann(a) Catherine's first husband passed away and, per the obit, she sold her belongings and took her son (the John W. listed with the 1835 birth year) and was residing in her parents' home by the time of the 1840 census. Leonard Wampler's 1840 census appears to back that bit of information up:

The daughter's obit shared that around 1847 to 1849, her parents, older brother, her and her son, John W. Martin, went to Wabash county, Indiana and they are present in that area for the 1850 US Census. Ann(a) Catherine is the Ann C. Wampler listed in William's household and I've already established that John W. is her son from a prior marriage, the census taker just listed everyone with the same surname.

In 1851, Ann(a) Catherine marries for a second time a Daniel Swank, which that marriage is noted in Roy H. Wampler's book and on the database website, although the database shared skeptical wording. Ann(a) Catherine had three sons with her second husband: Daniel D, William Henry (who passed away about the age of 5), and Jacob L. Swank. Daniel Swank [Sr.] passed away in 1860.

[Johann] Leonard Wampler passes away 31 January 1857 and is buried in his daughter's second husband's family cemetery in Wabash county, Indiana. William Wampler passes away 2 August 1861 and is also buried in his sister's second husband's family cemetery. This contradicts with many online trees, on FamilySearch, WikiTree, Ancestry, MyHeritage and et al, that list Leonard Wampler passing away in Gratis Township, Preble county, Ohio; however the information from Find A Grave more closely matches with the paper trail of Leonard Wampler.

Ann Martin Wampler is stated, in Roy H. Wampler's book and the Wampler/Wampfler database, to passing away in 1874. I cannot find her in the 1860 (she may been in her son's, William, household as she is not listed with Catherine or with another son, who resided in Cass county, Indiana, in 1860) nor the 1870 US census (as of this point in time). The FindAGrave's memorial page for her husband hints she is buried wih him in the same cemetery and is in an unmarked grave.

Ann(a) Catherine Wampler Martin Swank passes away in March of 1888 in Wabash county and is buried in the same cemetery (her grave is said to also be unmarked).

On my side of family tree researching, I have George W. Wampler's birth info as 24 Novermber 1838 in Indiana. I haven't pegged down what town and/or county.

For the death information I have George passing away 8 January 1915, most likely in Putnam county in Indiana. He is buried in Bainbridge, Putnam, Indiana in the Bainbridge Cemetery.

To fill in the middle, George W. Wampler married Mary Elizabeth Wilson on 8 November 1868 in Putnam county, Indiana. Mary was the daughter of Abraham P. (1821-1859) and Mary E. (1823-1915) Wilson. Mary Elizabeth Wilson was born 20 November 1843 in Lawrence county, Indiana. I have her listed as to passing 31 August 1881 and buried in Bainbridge, Putnam Indiana.

George W. Wampler is said to have served in the Civil War, but to date, I have not located information about dates or other details.

George is listed in his father's household for the 1850 US Census for Gosport, Owen, Indiana. In the 1880 US Census, for Bainbridge, Putnam, Indiana, Jeremiah P. Wampler is recorded with George's household. I have not located George's censuses for 1860 and 1870.

I have George W. and Mary E. (Wilson) Wampler having 5 children: Martin Tilman Wampler, Dora A. Wampler, Mary Emeline Wampler, Otto Wampler, and Grace Wampler. Grace Wampler passed away around the age of 13 and is buried in Bainbridge, Putnam, Indiana.

In answer to "Was this the Otto of Parke[r] Co IN who married Eva E ...", it appears that it is indeed the same Otto. His 1962 obituary states he was born in Bainbridge, Indiana. At the time of his passing his obit shared he had six daughters surviving him along with his widow, Eva.

FRANKFORT - Otto Wampler, 85, of 458 Center drive, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the Clinton county hospital after an illness of one week.

Mr. Wampler was a retired foreman of the Nickel Plate railroad and was a member of the Grace EUB church, Indianapolis. He was born at Bainbridge.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Eva (Petty) Wampler; and six daughters, Mrs. Ralph Fisher and Miss Dorothy Wampler, bot of Indianapolis, Mrs. Leola Johnson, of Chicago, Mrs. Homer McKinsey, Mrs. Marguerite Gould, and Mrs. Pauline Kellner, all of Frankfort.

In 1880 US Census Otto is listed in his parents' household (George W. Wampler and Mary Elizabeth Wilson). I have not located the 1900 US Census for Otto Wampler at this time. I did come across his 1910 - 1930 US Census reports for when he lived in Parke County and Clinton County. There is a 1940 Census where Otto is listed with an Edith and a Russell Wampler, this may be the same Otto Wampler and Eva was still alive at the time, as she passed away in 1973, so she may been erroneously listed as Edith.

Another US Census conundrum is that in the 1920 US Census there is a Noah R. Moore, age 2, listed to being Otto and Eva's grandchild - then in the 1930 US Census there is a Roy Wampler, age 12, listed as their son - who wasn't in the 1920 US Census. Could Noah R Moore be Roy Wampler? It does indeed seem that Noah R. Moore was actually Roy Robert Moore who would been would been around 12 for the 1930 US Census. Further research had me come across that Jessie Wampler married a Clyde Earl Moore in 1917, they divorced sometime after Roy's birth in 1918 and before the 1920 US Census. Clyde Moore was born in 1896 and passed in 1953. Following Roy R. Moore's paper trail - he passed away 1976 in Missouri.

What relation is Russell Lee Wampler, who appears in the 1940 US Census, to Otto and Eva (Petty) Wampler? He was another grandson of the couple. His birth record and death certificate list his parents to being Clint Gayle Hite/Hiatt and Dora Ellen Wampler. On his social security application he listed Otto Wampler as his father and Leola to being his mother, but I put a little more credence on the birth record listing Dora E. Wampler. Russell passed away in 2004. It appears he was part of Otto and Eva's household up to the very early 1950s.

So, if I am correctly cross-matching the census reports to the obits shared, I have the six daughters as follows: Jessie O. Wampler, who married Ralph Fisher, Leola Wampler who married 3 times - at the time of her parents' deaths she was married to Michael Johnson, Mary Marguerite Wampler, who married Doyle Olster then Ivan Jesse. Gould, Ruby Pearl who married Homer McKinsey then an Edwards, and Merle Pauline who married Alton Kallner. They had another daughter who died at 1 year in age in 1908.

As a side notation, Eva's middle name was Elizabeth according to the information Otto supplied, along with his birth date being 9 April 1876, in the World War I Selective Draft Registration for him in September, 1918 and Eva's own obit. One of their daughters, Ruby to be exact, set of marriage records has Eva's maiden transcribed as Petty and, in Otto's obit, her maiden name is also said to been Petty versus Peters. Otto and Eva (Petty) Wampler married 4 Feb 1900 in Bainbridge. Eva's obit follows:

Harvey George Wampler

So, I am working on uncovering what the source notation, of "Dorothy of the George Christian Wampler site", thought listed that involved Stuart David, Clarence Augusta, and Harvey George Wampler. I have the Wampler/Wampfler Database listing of children for Clarence Augusta Wampler, and his wife - Martha Janie Johnson, differing, or incomplete, in comparison to the listing of children shared for the couple on Martha Janie Johnson Wampler's FindaGrave Memorial page.

Using the Database's information, Harvey George Wampler and Dorothy Elizabeth Candler, daughter of Singleton Candler and Adeline Harriet Bausell, married March 21, 1864 in Russell County, Virginia and were the parents of Clarence Augusta Wampler. A 1900 US Census, for Ervington District, Dickenson County, Virginia helps to confirm this connection as, in the household of Harvey G. and Dortha E. Wampler, there is a Clarence A. Wampler listed as their son, along with another son, John T. Wampler. So, with one source of information, we have already added a sibling for Clarence Augusta Wampler.

(As a side note, the couple also had two lodgers listed on the 1900 US Census report: Douglas Beverly (age 5) and Nora L. Castle (age 3). I am sharing this information now as it may, or may not, be of use in the future within the family tree thoughts.)

Anyway, thanks to this one census report, it appears that Harvey G. Wampler and Dorothy Elizabeth Chandler had at least two children. I also found online Virginia Birth & Christening records for (Martha) Allis (Alice), David C., a male child born May 1, 1867, and Mary A. Wampler; Virginia Marriage for Arnold A. Wampler to Louisa J. Rasnake; and Tennessee Death record for Tabitha Ellen Wampler Hillman. The May 1, 1867 birth record closely matches with information for Casaway T. Wampler whose birth date, on some sources, is listed as May 5, 1867.

With these handful of records and the 1870 US Census report, I have the following nine children for Harvey George Wampler and Dorothy Elizabeth Candler: Martha Alice, William R., Tabitha Ellen, Arnold A., Casaway T., Clarence A., David C., John T., and Mary A. Wampler.

However, now I can backtrack to the cryptic source notation thoughts, shared with Stuart David Wampler's entry on the Wampler/Wampfler Database that led to Harvey George Wampler, of "Dorothy of the George Christian Wampler site". Without knowing what was actually shared, I am speculating that Dorothy may have supplied information to help verify Harvey George Wampler as the son of George Christian Wampler and his wife, Mary. On Harvey George Wampler's marriage license information his parents listed being Christian and Mary Wampler.

In the process I also managed to uncover more information about Harvey George Wampler (3rd cousin 3x removed to me), Dorothy Elizabeth Candler, and their children (4th cousins twice removed to me).

(Side notation: I have Dorothy Elizabeth's last name as Candler in my notes. Therefore, I may refer to her, if using her maiden name, as Dorothy Elizabeth Candler.)

The link shared for George Christian Wampler site, of www.claynet.com/athomas/wampler/, leads to a 404 Page Not Found. At the time of posting this information, I have not ascertained where the site was moved to ... therefore limited, at the moment, as to what is shared on the Database. Particularly when looking at the dates involved the odds are in favor of the Dorothy, listed as the source for the information for Harvey George Wampler, is not the Dorothy listed as Harvey's wife. This also means I do not have access to what information Dorothy originally shared about Harvey George Wampler through their personal web site.

My tactic is first to uncover what information is available for Stuart David Wampler as some of that may be of help to fill in the information gap. In doing this, I came across the following:

Stuart David Wampler, 87 of Fairlawn, passed away Monday, July 17, 2006 at his home. He was a Member of the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. There I hit a brick wall with this avenue. Going through FindAGrave links shared, for Stuart David Wampler's parents, it states Clarence Augusta Wampler and Martha Janie Johnson Wampler were interred in Temple Hill Memorial Park at Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia. On the created Memorial pages both Clarence and Martha's death dates are listed as "unknown" as of September 12, 2014. Martha is said to be the daughter of Levi Jarvis Johnson and Elizabeth Ivy.

On Clarence Augusta Wampler's Memorial page there is very little information shared (birthdate of April 11, 1874 in Carroll County, Virginia). On his wife's page, the person shared a birthdate of Feb. 22, 1879 and a(n unlinked) listing of children for the couple: Alverta Henrietta Wampler Greening 1904 xxxx, Charles Abel Wampler 1906 1996, Ray Pierce Wampler 1908 1992, Ernest Levi Wampler 1910 xxxx, Beulah Mary Wampler Morris 1912 xxxx, Alice Bell Wampler Fugate 1915 1938, Iris Ellen Wampler Farmer 1916 xxxx, Stuart David Wampler 1919 2006, and Frances Martha Wampler Gobble 1921 xxxx.

Which hm5-223 leads us to .. well, Clarence Augusta Wampler himself. None of the other children, listed on Martha Janie Johnson Wampler's Memorial page, on FindaGrave, are listed within the Wampler/Wampfler Database. So, using the information provided on those two sources, we have a bit of a mystery to work on in sorting the sources of the information shared!

Herman Clinton Broadwater, Amelia Jane Warne, and Mary Magdalene Clem

If Clara J. Wampler Broadwater passed away in 1903, as stated elsewhere, then her spouse, Archibald Broadwater, remarried before his death. From Archibald's obituary notice we see that his daughter, mentioned in the 1900 US Census, was married to a Chester (Arthur) Green, son of Simon Ward Green and Eliza Ellen Broadwater, by the time of his passing. Herman? Is he the Clinton listed in the household back in 1900 ... or a child from Archibald Broadwater's second marriage? Looking at Archibald Broadwater's 1910 US Census report it appears that Herman is the Clinton mentioned back in 1900. Archibald's second wife's name was Margaret.

Herman Clinton Broadwater appears again in court records relating to the probating of his father's will. A 1930 US Census report shares Herman Broadwater married Amelia Jane Warne and they had five children living in the household. Amelia Warne Broadwater passed away in 1933. Herman Clinton Broadwater also registered for World War I and II's draft. This paper trail has him alive at least until 1942, thereby negates the Clinton Broadwater in Whetzel-Fike Cemetery being him but quite possibly his son who passed away in 1917.

Other information, gleamed from another family tree site, shared Clara's middle name was Jane. It also shared that Meda C. was Media Clementine. However, in Archibald Broadwater's obituary, it is stated he was buried in the Weitzel Cemetery. On FindAgrave's listing of internments, for the Whetzel-Fike Cemetery, he is not listed. However, his daughter-in-law and three of his grandchildren were interred at the cemetery.

Further searching on FindAGrave has Herman Clinton Broadwater living until Aug 22 1960 before he passed away in Baltimore City, Maryland. Herman was buried in Philos Cemetery in Westernport, Allegany County, Maryland.

The memorial page for him also shared that Herman Clinton Broadwater married a second time to Mary Magdalene Clem (1901-1994), the daughter of Jacob and Emma Clem. She was a widow of Carl E. Hershberger )1897-1931). Mary Clem Hershberger Broadwater is also buried in Philos Cemetery.

Archibald Broadwater and Clara Jane Wampler

According to information found on an 1870 Census report, Daniel Saylor Wampler was married to Helen L. Weitzell and lived in Somerset County, Pennsylvania with their three children: Clara J. (1866), (Jonas) Elias (~1868), and Benjamin H. Wampler (1870). Clara and Jonas Elias were born in Indiana and Benjamin H. in Pennsylvania. I have only come across the 1870, 1910, and 1920 US Census reports for Daniel S. Wampler. Since none of the children from Daniel Saylor's marriages are mentioned in William Freeman Wampler's obituary, I am leaning to thinking all had passed prior to 1966.

I came across Clara Wampler, born in 1866 and passing in 1903, listed among the 22 individuals stated to be buried in Whetzel-Fike Cemetery in Garret County, Maryland. The memorial page for her stated her spouse was "archibale[sic] broadwater" and I used that information to locate a census report for Archibald Broadwater who had a wife named Clara born 1866 in Indiana. The birth information matched up to the 1870 US Census and the fact she was buried in the same small family cemetery as Daniel Saylor Wampler, Helen L. Weitzel, and Susan Bittinger helped seal the deal. Clara J. Wampler and Archibald Broadwater, according to the 1900 US Census, were married in 1883 and had two children: a daughter named Meda C. (1884) and a son named Clinton (1892).

BROADWATER - Lonaconing- Archibald Broadwater, aged 54 years, died at his home at Avilton on Monday from liver cancer. His wife and son, Herman at home and a daughter, Mrs Chester Green survive. Burial in the Weitzel Cemetery.

Archibald's second wife was Margaret. Although his obituary states he was buried in the Weitzell Cemetery, his name does not appear in the FindAGrave listing of internments for the Whetsell-Fike Cemetery in Garret County, Maryland.

William Freeman Wampler and Mary Emma Dishong

"WILLIAM F. WAMPLER FROSTBURG- William Freeman Wampler, 82, died yesterday from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had reportedly been in ill health for a long period of time. Born in Avilton, Md., he was a son of the late Daniel S. and Susan (Bittinger) Wampler. He was a member of the Cherry Hill Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary (Dishong) Wampler; three sons, Saylor Wampler, RD 1, Frostburg; Edward Wampler, RD 2, Frostburg; and Harold Enlow Wampler, Manassas, Va.; seven grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p. m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. A service will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 2 p. m. by Rev. Joseph Lewis. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Edwin Wampler, William Wampler, Ervin Wampler, Lawrence Groer, Eugene McKenzie and Leroy Dishong."

The paper trail, via the above obituary notice and US Veterans payment card for Daniel Saylor Wampler, helps to conclude that William Freeman Wampler is a child from Daniel S. Wampler's second marriage.

In William Freeman Wampler's widow's obituary notice none of their children are listed among the surviving family members. This would have me leaning to that they had passed away before 1978 but, according to one of her grandchildren's 2000 obituary, and incorrect assumption. Mary Emma Dishong Wampler was the daughter of John Charles Dishong and Martha Elizabeth Oner.

I came across a Veteran Pension file for a Daniel S. Wampler that died on October 12, 1928. According to the record Daniel S. Wampler served as Private in 147th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Co. H. It also stated he was disabled but does not share what his disability would’ve been. He started to receive the pension in 1890. On this same file a reimbursement noted made to a William Wampler in Frostburg, Maryland in January 1929.

His enlistment is further backed up, in online researching, through FamilySearch's United States Civil War Soldiers Index, 1861-1865. Combining all this information I now have two names to work with, William Wampler and Bittinger, and three states, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

William is a common name, but curiosity leads to thinking this has to be a child of Daniel S. Wampler (in order to receive any monies from Daniel’s military pension). However the Wampler/Wampfler Database entry, listed above, does not list any spouses for Daniel Saylor Wampler. FindAGrave search for a Daniel Wampler born in 1844 did not provide any assistance. but using just the year of death of 1928 lead to an entry. According to the memorial page, Daniel Wampler was born in 1842 and died 1928 in Garrett County, Maryland. He is buried in Whetzell-Fike Cemetery in Avilton, Garrett County, Maryland. It also listed a Susan Bittenger as his spouse. Her memorial page only shares she died in Garrett County, Maryland and was buried in the same cemetery. So he had a spouse, Susan, but we know little about her other than her maiden name which happens to be similar to the family history resource used above for his military service.

Using this little bit of information I came across an obituary notice for the William mentioned above in the Veteran Pension file:

WILLIAM F. WAMPLER FROSTBURG - William Freeman Wampler, 82, died yesterday [...] Born in Avilton, Md., he was a son of the late Daniel S. and Susan (Bittinger) Wampler. He was a member of the Cherry Hill Church of the Brethren. [...]

But, I am not finished with Daniel Saylor Wampler as he leaves an interesting trail on paper. He appears in 1850 US Census for Augusta County VA in the household of his parents. Then he appears again in the 1870 US Census living in Somerset County PA. In the PA census records he is listed having a wife named Helen and three children: Clara, Elias, and Benjamin H. Wampler.

Who is this Helen? Daniel may provide a clue as he is buried in Whetzell-Fike Cemetery and, with 22 internments shared on FindAGrave, this is likely a family cemetery.

In this cemetery there are two Clara Wampler listed as among the internments but one with the birth year of 1866. This would coincide with the information on Daniel’s 1870 Pennsylvania US Census. Clara Wampler Broadwater’s memorial page mentions she was married to a “Archibale[sic] Broadwater”. I found Archibald Broadwater’s 1900 US Census report from Garrett County, Maryland that had a spouse named Clara … born in Indiana. So this would help confirm this is Daniel Saylor Wampler’s daughter. This would also be the only US Census she would appear in after marriage, due to there wasn’t one taken in 1890 and she passed away in 1903.

Scrolling down the list, there is a Helen L. Weitzel listed but provides no clues on if this the Helen appearing in the 1870 US Census with Daniel. Our Helen is listed as being born around 1847 and the cemetery provides only two people that may been her parents, if this Helen L. Weitzel is one and the same, and that is Elias and Fannie Weitzel.

Doing math on information shared in William Freeman Wampler’s obituary, if he was 82 in 1966 this would have him born about 1884. If Daniel Saylor married a second time then it was between 1870, when he took the US Census, and 1883. This would also mean that Helen may have passed away within that same span of time. Applying math skills onto Daniel Saylor Wampler’s later US Census 1910 and 1920 reports with Susan Bittenger, without indepth research but a cursory glance at the 1850 US census reports taken in Maryland, I have narrowed down her parents to being: Solomon and Ann Bittinger or Peter and Sarah Bittinger.

Based upon these US Census reports, I have come to the conclusion that Daniel Saylor Wampler married Helen L. Weitzel and had three children in Indiana and Pennsylvania. If she passed away in Pennsylvania, it would make sense that Daniel S. Wampler may have moved to Maryland so her family could help with the children. Based upon obituaries and US Census reports, Daniel married again before 1884 to a Susan(na) Bittinger/Biddinger. One source has Daniel Saylor and Susan Bittinger Wampler having three children in Maryland. So, until we come across more information, I will work with the notion he had between 4 to 6 children through his two marriages.

Wampler-Wampfler Database Information Correction: Royal Edward Wampler's Children

In regard to the children of Royal Edward Wampler and Goldena R. Gilmore of Knox County, Indiana:

The birth years listed for these two are very wrong. Even if you base it upon the 1880 birth year of Royal Edward Wampler alone. However, thanks to familysearch.org's site, I have come across more accurate birth information for these two individuals.

On Elizabeth Ann Wampler's 1932 marriage application, to Everett Messel, she listed her birth date as Jan 27 1914. According to the 1940 US Census, Elizabeth and Everett apparently had a daughter named Sue, around 1933, that was listed as living with Royal Edward and Goldena Wampler. Everett Messel enlisted in the Army in April 1941 and stated he was divorced with dependents. He married a second time, in 1947, to Muriel DeCoursey and had 3 more children.

On the October 1941 marriage application, of Royal Franklin Wampler to Evelyn Lorean Fisher Ragsdale, Frank stated his birth date as Feb 17 1911 and that both of his parents were deceased. This was Royal Franklin Wampler's second marriage, he states his first marriage ended in divorce in 1938. Evelyn Lorean Fisher was previously married to Waldo Luther Ragsdale, had a daughter, and divorced in 1940. Evelyn married yet one more time as, in her and Waldo's daughter obituary, her last name was listed as White. I have not come across information about Royal Franklin Wampler's first marriage.

In 1930 US Census, Royal Franklin Wampler is listed living with his aunt, Mayfair Hannah Gilmore, and her husband, Murlin Walker Boyd, in Indianapolis. Waldo R. Luking, 28, is listed as being a boarder in the household. From what I've ascertained, according to US Census reports, Murlin and Mayfair did not have any children. Murlin was the son of David F. Boyd and Louetta Neal of Knox County.

Royal Edward Wampler's wife, Goldena R., and her sister, Mayfair Hannah, were daughters of William M. Gilmore and Charlotte Ann "Lottie" Wallace.

At this point in time, I have not come across when Royal Franklin or Elizabeth Ann passed away. Wondering if perhaps the years listed for them of 1969 and 1960,on the Wampler/Wampfler Database site, are when they passed versus born?
